SCHMEES defence is a department of SCHMEES cast Langenfeld GmbH. The SCHMEES defence portfolio includes
technical solutions for protection & mobility
based on components made of cast steel and stainless steel for the military and civilian sectors.
The core focus is the production and optimization of components for the defense industry. As a component manufacturer, we meet the requirements of major system houses.
The basis for this is the qualification as an armor steel casting manufacturer according to TL 2350-0002. The application of digital and additive technologies forms the basis for ready-to-install spare parts, individual pieces, and small series made of cast steel.

SCHMEES cast in the focus of WDR Westpol

The security policy situation has changed fundamentally, and with it, the demands on industry in Germany. As a medium-sized family business, we reacted early, took responsibility, and systematically expanded our expertise in the defense industry with a focus on protection and defense.
With our department, SCHMEES defence, we are today the only privately managed German foundry with approval for Bundeswehr armor steel. This has been a demanding path that involved high requirements and lengthy testing procedures. Simply securing appointments for ballistic tests at the Bundeswehr’s Technical Center for Weapons and Ammunition (WTD) sometimes took more than six months.
We want to contribute to the security architecture, secure existing jobs, and create new ones. Because even though no one can approve of war, a strong defense industry is unfortunately a necessary contribution to peace today.
The WDR report („Zeitenwende as an Opportunity – How Industry in NRW is Switching to Armament“) shows how we set our course early and what contribution small and medium-sized enterprises in North Rhine-Westphalia can make. We pursue our path with this commitment: responsibly, long-term, and with a view toward the future of our employees.

How does a stainless steel foundry become a sought-after partner for armor steel? In the IHK live podcast „Wirtschaft unplugged,“ our Managing Director, Clemens Schmees, spoke openly about the challenges and experiences that Schmees cast mastered on the path to building the Schmees defence business unit. Three years of hard work and setbacks, but ultimately the qualification for high-strength components that are in demand worldwide today. Together with representatives from administration and the financial world, they discussed what security means for companies, locations, and investments today, and why military resilience has long since become an economic necessity.

Die Gießerei hinter SCHMEES defence
Die Produktion erfolgt durch die SCHMEES cast GmbH an den Standorten Langenfeld und Pirna. Das Familienunternehmen blickt auf mehr als 60 erfolgreiche Jahre zurück. Das Familiäre ist dabei ein wichtiger Teil der Firmenphilosophie. Über 260 Mitarbeiter und 17 Auszubildende sorgen in beiden Werken für Präzision und Qualität in Stahl und Edelstahl aus einem Guss.
Gießen als Kernkompetenz
In Kombination mit modernen, additiven Technologien entstehen Präzisionsgussteile für nationale und internationale Kunden. Durch unsere stetige Weiterentwicklung sind wir in der Lage, auf veränderte Anforderungsprofile zu reagieren.
Qualifiziert für Bauteile aus Panzerstahlguss
Hervorzuheben ist die hohe Werkstoffkompetenz der Gießereigruppe. Das Portfolio umfasst aktuell ca. 300 verschiedene Stahlgussqualitäten. Darunter befinden sich auch hochvergütete Stahlsorten mit extremen Festigkeitsprofilen. Die Panzerstahlgussqualitäten nach TL 2350-0002 bilden unter der Marke seculloy® die Basis für die hohen Anforderungen der wehrtechnischen Gussanwender.

SCHMEES defence Kompetenzen
Die Spezialisten von SCHMEES defence produzieren in Zusammenarbeit mit Partnern neue Produkte, die mehr leisten, die haltbarer sind oder völlig neue Funktionen integrieren können. Hierzu zählen auch neue Werkstoffe in Kombination mit anderen Materialien, die eine höhere Schutzklasse bei gleichem Gewicht erzielen.
Strategischer Innovationspartner
Nicht verfügbare Ersatzteile sind ein großes Thema im Bereich der wehrtechnischen Verwendungen. Die Ursachen hierfür sind äußerst vielfältig und natürlich auch in den langen Verwendungszeiträumen der Systeme begründet. Im Rahmen der Digitalisierung überführen wir bestehende Bauteile und Konstruktionen aus der analogen in die digitale Welt.
Die erzeugten digitalen Daten bilden die Grundlage für die Anwendung verschiedener Methoden:
- Retrofitting (Upgrades)
- Reverse Engineering
- Verfahrenssubstitution
Auf diesem Wege entstehen neue Bauteile, die schnell und effizient reproduzierbar sind und die Beschaffung somit erleichtern.
